Prayer Synchroblog: When I’m spoken too

August 27th, 2007

Lyn has been involved in initiating a syncroblog on prayer today. I readily admit that I’m not good at prayer – in terms of discipline. Whenever I’ve tried to institute it in my life it has felt dry and soon grinds to a halt. So how do I cope in pastoral ministry without a set prayer life – well not very well at times. But I do end up praying a fair bit as I make my way through life.

  • I’m motivated to pray when something in life “stirs me up” – a piece of news, or in a conversation with someone – sometimes I just think – I have to pray, and quite passionately at that. Sometimes I pray in tongues, usually as I’m walking down the street! (I try to be discreet) I find that I pray like this when I’ve not idea how God can change a desperate situation, but trust that He can.
  • When someone asks me to pray, I will pray. (most of the time)
  • But by far the greatest motivation to pray to God in my life, is when God initiates the conversation. It’s a bit like the idea that we only love God because He first loved us; it’s Him who initiates it. When God initiates conversation, speak to me, gets through my thick skull, ear wax or whatever … then I talk back to Him, there and then.
  • So, usually its God who prompts activity in our relationship, not the other way around.

Love this. I think it’s so true. God knows how to get our attention, and when he does, he has it completely.

jonathan- thank you so much for participating! I”m with Lyn, the thought of praying often when god initiates the conversation is such a beautiful idea to me! I wonder how often he tries to initiate conversations and i don’t pay any attention. you’ve got me thinking…

Jon – I have heard it said that God never asks anything of us that He hasn’t given to us first, and this seems to go along with God initiating prayer.

While I know many people find that set prayer times/methods work for them, I’m encouraged by the amount of people who are more like me – fly by the seat of my pants, or something.

thanks very much, i love the the idea of God iniatied prayer – if God is in eternal open conversation that takes a lot of the pressure off me starting something and instead joining in with something ongoing…

Don’t think we can ask for better motivation. I like that!
